All Beautiful Skin Starts with Cleansing

First things first. Everything good starts with cleansing. How your clients wash their face can make a difference in their overall appearance, skin health and effectiveness of their skincare products. When talking with your clients about the importance of cleansing, remind them to do the following:

  • Use a cleanser that is formulated for the true skin type.
  • Wash with lukewarm water only and use their fingertips to gently apply cleanser. Anything else such as a washcloth or sponge can irritate their skin.
  • Speaking of irritating their skin…don’t scrub with a cloth!
  • Gently rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.
  • Then begin immediately with their skincare routine. Serums first, then moisturizers, then sunscreen.

The Benefits are Real

When your clients cleanse for their skin type, they are setting their skin up for success all day (and night) long. Since cleansing is not a “one-size-fits-all: approach, accurate skin analysis is the key to treatments and home care regimens. The goal is to correct, balance and improve the quality of the skin using custom botanical formulations. Educate clients that the type of skin they are born with is determined by the characteristics it displays, not by gender, ethnicity, color or condition. Then talk to them about the benefits of making an informed decision about their cleanser.

  • It will help control pore size by unclogging pores and preventing the production of excess oils leading to clearer skin.
  • Gives their skin additional benefits from specific ingredients that will enhance their skin type.
  • It will improve overall skin health and minimize any potential side effects or issues such as overly dry, stripped and dehydrated skin.

Types of Cleansers

Milk Cleansers: Best for Dry, Combo, Dry-Acne, Mature and Reactive Skin

Milk cleansers are made from lightweight emollients and are nourishing while not leaving a residue on the skin. Make sure to remind your clients that they won’t “foam,” but that doesn’t mean they aren’t working. Milk cleansers rely instead on ingredients such as argan oil, carrot seed, and vitamin E, making them very effective at removing makeup while moisturizing the skin.

Best for mature, dry, combo, or reactive skin, milk cleansers will thoroughly cleanse without dehydrating or stripping, soften fine lines, and help calm and strengthen skin. Milk cleansers work to keep the skin’s barrier intact, guarding against inflammation and keeping the skin balanced.

Gel Cleansers: Best for Oily or Oily-Acne Skin:

One of the biggest benefits of a gel cleanser is its cleansing capabilities—all without stripping the skin. By using an all-natural formula that causes little irritation to the skin, it allows for thorough cleansing of pores while removing dirt and excess oil off the surface of the skin at the same time. If the skin is on the oilier side a gel cleanser is typically the best bet, helping to eliminate excess oil from the face. A good gel cleanser will also gently exfoliate and clarify. Gel cleansers are water-based and rely on all-natural ingredients such as cajeput, witch hazel, rosemary, grapefruit, and lemon to help clarify breakouts and prevent future blemishes.
